History
Bergheim has a rich history that dates back to Roman times, when it served as a strategic settlement. The village was officially established in the 8th century and flourished under the rule of various noble families.
During the Middle Ages, Bergheim became a fortified town, surrounded by impressive walls that still stand today. These fortifications helped the village withstand numerous conflicts between France and Germany.
The village is infamous for its numerous witch trials in the 16th and 17th centuries, making Bergheim one of the most notable locations for such trials in Alsace.

Forty women were burned alive, including 22 in the space of five months for the year 1630 alone. Today, visitors can learn about this dark chapter of the village’s history at the local museum and through informative plaques scattered around town.
The village was damaged during World War II as many of the villages in the area, but was meticulously restored, preserving its medieval character and charm.
Today, it stands as one of the most beautiful villages in France, attracting visitors from all over the world.
